10 Mistakes New Managers Make…And How to Avoid Them! 2 CPE

Course Duration: 2 Hours
Course Rating:
Course Enrollments: 13203 Enrolled
Mode of Delivery: on_demand
Course Level: Intermediate
Study Area: Specialized Knowledge

It’s your first day. New role. New responsibilities. New organization. New people. New culture. Everything is new. Everything.

Or…

It’s your first day. Changed role. Changed responsibilities. Same organization. Same people. Same culture. But everything has changed. Everything.

This is the reality of a new manager. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been with an organization for 20 years or 20 minutes, it’s a whole new ballgame now.

Your role is unlike any other pre-management position you’ve held before. The job description is much broader including verbs like lead, direct, and determine. The responsibilities and stakes are higher with the ability to impact – either positively or negatively – on a greater scope.

The sociological implications are significant. Remember all those conversations you used to have about your manager? They are having those conversations about you. What are they saying? What do you wish your manager would have known or done at the time you reported to them? It’s not enough that you are beginning a challenging new role; you are doing it on a stage.

And it’s no longer about what you can accomplish as an individual contributor, but rather what you can accomplish through others as an individual and team developer

First impressions are everything. Your people want to know if you are competent, capable, and worthy of their allegiance. And they’ll make that decision within a matter of days. The first conversations, the first meetings, the first initiatives all set precedents that can take months to undo if you start out on the wrong foot.

Start on the right foot. Learn about the 10 mistakes new managers make and how to avoid them. This course is for new managers or any director or human resource professional helping support a new manager.

The course material is a must read for all CPAs. From all of the ASU with hundreds of pages, it is clear that Mr. Camehl has put considerable efforts to deduce it to easily understandable and practical use. The course material could easily be made into a desk top procedures for practicing CPAs who are engaging in corporate accounting. It is comprehensive and at the same time, to the point and most importantly, practical. Thank you for the course and the material.

User Image

User Image
matthew.delaney

I will comment on one aspect of the course in particular. The presenter recommended criminal background checks as a method to prevent fraud. He fails to address the issue that biases in the criminal justice system against racial minorities result in such checks having a disparate impact on those same minorities. He also does not address the fact that such checks will turn up information that is prejudicial but of questionable relevance for preventing fraud (for example, minor drug convictions or other minor violations of the law), which in turn will make it difficult for people with those convictions to move on from their pasts. Other than that, the course was good.

User Image

The course author used creative approach to teach the strenghts and weaknesses of the two excel tools.

User Image
stephen.leitz

I always enjoy Neil's classes and how he teaches. His storytelling always makes the class fun and engaging. I love how simple the concepts always seem when he breaks things down. Difficult people are tough to deal with and work with, but, we always have the choice to deal with it and control ourselves, or, we let ourselves get affected by the negative emotion. But, the choice is ours.

User Image
stephen.louis_1

User Image

This course is important for employees on all levels and even in our personal lives. I really like the points made on the importance of Listening well.

User Image
sherry.gong

What I appreciated: The recap at the end is helpful to reinforce the most important concepts. The quizes are a nice touch because it tests your knowledge while you're watching the course. Areas of improvement: There is a lot of content in this short course, and it would be overwhelming for someone who has no experience in accounting. Additionally, I think it's much more helpful to learners to teach that Assets = Liabilities + Equity rather than Assets - Liabilities = Equity, so it reinforces the idea that Liabilities & Equity should have a credit balances. When going over the example for Lesson 2: Posting Entries (continued), it would be helpful to list the numbers we know before showing the correct entry.

User Image
kelseykozachuk

This webinar is helpful in understanding the annual audit that we go through in our company. Thanks.

User Image
jared.watts

The information provided in this course was presented well and provided a good overall understanding of the planning process of an audit. However, the exam itself needs to be proofread as there were several questions that were written so poorly as to make no sense of the question being asked.

User Image
kathy.bennett

This is an area of the tax law that is very complicated. This course provided a good general overview of the rules in an organized fashion.

This course is a good overview of professional ethics for MD CPAs

User Image
erwin.sou

This was an eye opening experience. I think everyone thinks planning and goal setting is a waste of time. And now I've learned that those people, myself included, have been living in the present by focusing on just getting going on something, with no real clear goal, in mind. I need to set aside some time no matter what and really plan out any goal I set out to accomplish. It's easy to think you will be able to come up with a plan on the way, but that was my naive thinking.

User Image
nathan.padgett

Insightful course. I was just recently promoted and now manage a team of 10 employees. I have been looking for advice and tips to make my 1:1s more impactful and this course delivered! While I have set the expectation with each employee to come prepared with 1:1 agendas, I have fallen short on not asking my employees to recap our discussions. Rather, I take care of that which takes additional time and strain on me and limits the development of my team members and holding them and myself accountable.

User Image
mouaed.wahba

Allotted time is not sufficient or fair. It should be twice or three times. thx

User Image
zubia.villacorta

This was a great course that helped me to review non-profit entities and compliance with rules and regulations.

User Image

Content was ok but the instructor was clearly reading off a script, so it wasn't as enjoyable as some of the other courses on Illumeo. There are also some grammatical errors in the final exam questions which made it a bit confusing.

User Image
johanna.haskell

I enjoyed this course. The content was what was advertised. The instructor had engaging presentation skills and good pacing. I learned some things I can apply in my job. The review questions and quiz questions mapped well to the course content. I also appreciated the handouts/guides the instructor included in the course.

User Image
mary.rawn

The course provided a good overview of the AP process.

User Image
denise.cutrone

So many things to remember; will definitely incorporate this into my presentations. So very helpful

User Image
brian.lambrecht

I've taken several of Lynn's courses on Illumeo. The content is good. However, the tests exhibit a pattern of unnecessary examination. For example, almost every 1 hour CPE course on Illumeo has 5 questions. This one has 10. Her questions are often wordy and contain multiple, multiple choice answers. It's more of an annoyance at the end of a usually informative session.

User Image

Some problematic statements on gender and gender norms.

User Image

User Image

User Image

Though the material in this course was well thought out and presented, I found it distasteful and unpatriotic to include a former president, not just as an example of an amoral/immoral leader, but also the answer to an exam question. Keep your politics out of my professional learning materials...

User Image
xiang.mar

Cybersecurity Program and Roles is a great course with in depth explanation and discussion.

User Image
stephen.sylvester

In just two hours, this course will allow accounting and finance professionals to write significantly better. The first part of the course shines. As a professional writer, it provided a useful summary of business writing principles. Most professionals will learn new information that they can instantly apply to improve their writing. While the second part also provided critical information, it felt much less content-dense than the first part. This section only needed half the time allotted. Overall, an excellent course and a productive use of time.

User Image

I have to admit that I gave up on watching the video within 20 minutes because of the background music...it's really annoying.

User Image
michael.harper

Excellent course. Really enjoyed learning about the topics presented here. Instructor was wonderful. Would certainly recommend this course to my friends, family, and colleagues.

User Image
dianh.sarman-moschetti

Depending on the student's knowledge of Excel this may be a little basic. However, there are several little tricks to incorporate. This instructor performs a double presentation of the material, it is great if you are unfamiliar with what is being taught, it can be redundant if you are more knowledgeable about the subject; but as a general approach I feel it is helpful.

User Image
reaghan.reid

I didn't feel like the questions about The TV Show or "Nerds" were appropriate to the material. "Nerd" tends to be perceived as a derogatory term and doesn't feel like it fits in with the concept of Emotional Intelligence.

User Image
kingsley.onyekwelu

Barry Zalma is very dull and boring. He even seems un-interested in the lecture he is giving.

User Image

* Content was relevant, but in some instances more attenuated to the core topic of maturing an ERM function. * Disproportionate amount of time on various examples (e.g., FCPA, tax regulation, SEC and gatekeepers, historical/contextual backdrop) and survey results versus the 3 stages themselves (approx. last 15 min.), along with practices, tools and insights.

User Image
melissa_kronenberger

The course itself was fantastic. I would take pieces of it again as refreshers. Given the final exam is 160 questions, I would have been better suited to take the classes in two hour chunks with credit after each class. It was also incredibly frustrating to answer the same question numerous times in the final exam.

User Image

Solid examples provided during the course. I agree with one of the key concepts, which was made very clear, that a conflict interest is not necessarily a problem. Once a conflict of interest is identified, it must be evaluate before determining what remedial action should be taken (if any action is required).

User Image

User Image
matthew.proffer

The content is good but the format of the review/exam questions could be enhanced. Questions about the subject matter focused on the student trying to remember which sub-topic was associated with what buzz word/term in the presentation. Since this presentation seemed to be more of something I'd see in a seminar, I think a better way to test someone's understanding would be to ask questions in a scenario format, where the student's response truly tests their understanding or whether they internalized the concepts.

User Image
justinesoares

User Image

User Image
dalia.hargrave

Very helpful and informative course. As a new manager, I'm grateful I found this course early in my role. I plan to print and post the 10 Mistakes and keep them close by at work so that I can review them periodically.

User Image
duy.nguyen

This was well detailed while providing very efficient timely lessons of the general topic.

User Image
mwong

Overall great webinar. It would be helpful to reduce the number of abbreviations in the slides though.

User Image
steve.seggerman

This course was very easy to follow and I gained greater insight on what type of leader I am.

User Image
allyssa.gleason

I enjoyed this course. The instructor had real-life knowledge and examples that he drew from to teach the steps in the vendor negotiation process. This course went step-by-step through what to consider for your first negotiation.

User Image
drh105

Very nice - I like the course and the image of the flat file...as it is probably similar to what a lot of people are seeing.

User Image
jeremy.sallie

What you would expect for a foundation level course. The questions proved to be a nice refresher.

User Image
quinn.bonta

Great test for practicing payroll accounting principles.

User Image
mat.fisher

Erik should do more courses. Very clearly explained.

User Image
bryan.oliver

Thoroughly enjoyed the detailed analysis of excel functions and shortcuts. Excel is such an underutilized tool for data analytics.

User Image
johaine.thomas-miranjie

Presentation was simple and clear. Easy to follow and understand. Useful for all levels of management.

User Image
ahollenkamp

The course was very interesting! Lynn did a great job explaining forensic accounting!

User Image
susan.evans

It seemed very general to someone with any knowledge of the yellow book. The presenter tried to make it interesting.

User Image
melinda.schneider

As a new manager this had good information on some things to initially avoid when starting out as a manager.

User Image
grant.brannum

Very informative and organized in an easy to follow method. Enjoyed the training.

User Image
laurence.gutcher

The presenter lacks tone and speaks far too slowly to remain engaged. The presenter also reads the slides, providing very little additional insight.

User Image
cpe4me.hilbert

Great presentation ideas that everyone presenting should apply. Be sure to save the pdf of Blair Cook's lesson so you can refresh and hone your skills for your next presentation.

User Image
bill.clark

Very good detailed summary of all aspects of the new COSO framework.

User Image
juan.pozzi

Very useful overview of ASC606 that will hook you up. It opens the palette of impacts in several industries alerting you to dive deeper into its complexities and to follow the remainder courses on the subject.

User Image
michael.robertson

The speed of the presenter when talking was way too fast. We were learning about presenting to non financial managers and I could not keep up with the flow of information. Way too fast and way too much.

User Image
nebbster

This course is outdated, based on 2016 tax law. It is completely irrelevant in 2018/2019. It needs to be updated.

User Image
brian.g.marburg

Easy to follow slides (mostly reading off slides than commentary but slide information is sufficient), thorough explanation regarding calculations, reinforces key concepts, good refresher for basic finance concepts.

User Image
kirit.kapadia

Good insight in personalities and leadership. Excellent explanations of human behavior

User Image
yuxin.cai

The lecturer gives a very clear lecture. Very well organized material presented. Great exercises to understand ethics.

The answer to question 5 of the final exam is incorrect because it was not updated for the 2018 change in bonus depreciation depreciation %.

User Image
jan.laudenbach

Clear explanation of the structure of the template.

User Image
laurabenson

The format for examples is helpful conceptually but difficult to read due to messy handwriting.

User Image
erika.phillips

Trainer was mostly reading from slides, didn't offer multiple examples.

User Image
christie.winstead

Good general information, but nothing specific is talked about. It's more to help you think of how you could use and set up a one pager in your own company.

User Image
bobby.gehm

instructor was just ok, not great. A bit mono-tone and not enough tangible, quality examples.

User Image
susan.vogler-wesp

Not terribly relevant now that Excel 2016 is available.

User Image
tao.yang

The course is full of useful and practical information. I felt that I learned a lot from it.

User Image
deugenio

There is no correct answer for question #3. Can you double check this?

User Image
mondania.drummond

Too simple. I learned this as a sophomore in college - not necessary once you are a CPA.

User Image
thalliday

It was a good course. I wish it would have gone into more with subtotaling as it relates to pivot tables. Never saw the need for a custom list but it was interesting to learn. My favorite part was learning the Alt = is the shortcut for SUM.

User Image
manish.kothari

The speaker has provided very nice explanation with examples.

User Image
susan.harder

Lots of helpful tips & insights. Good ideas of different ways to deal with conflicts.

Surprisingly, every manager can relate to these mistakes. It is extremely helpful to all managers out there. I have recommended this training to my colleagues and including those who aspire to become a people manager. Thank you Neil.

User Image
theodore.zeck

This came pretty easy to me, as I'm a CPA by license, but layman at heart.

User Image
christine.eubanks

This course would be beneficial for consultants that work with small companies that do not have a finance department.

User Image
jennifer.richardson

Really liked discussion around the two types of leadership and the characteristics of each. Good guidance from presenter in terms of focusing on one of two qualities to improve over the next 6 months. Overall a very practical session that anyone can benefit from.

User Image
rebecca_demo

This course was very interesting and truly will impact my work performance for the better based on its detailed review of the close process.

User Image
lilyyao

I think it'd be more valuable for new managers to learn more tips or advice on how to avoid these mistakes and how to be better.

User Image
bradley.kelly

satisfied with course, met objectives in a timely manner. do not like that you have to write a review on the course with a minimum # of characters before you can claim your score and certificate

User Image
angan

This is an excellent starter course to get anyone who is interested in the new revenue recognition standards, ASC 606, familiar with the new requirements. It breaks down the 5 step model and explains what is required for each step.

User Image
christopher.lynch

I wish instructor took some time to spell out some of conditions in functions he was demonstrating

User Image
carlinton.clarke

Lot of new information to absorb but was very informative .

User Image
michael.o'malley

Difficult to follow instructor as mutliple screen shots are applied to each slide in the presentation

User Image
alex.ledin

Most firms don't do M&A well. If their corporate development staff sat through this short course and took it to heart, there would be a lot less value destruction.

User Image
christine.edwards

Very insightful and great suggestions for creating a mutually beneficial relationship between leader and subordinates.

User Image
bryan.baker

This course provided a good overview of how to account for book-tax differences, as well as how to effectively navigate the Schedule M-1

User Image
adam.robbins

This is the only course I have ever done on Illumeo that does not have a continuous playback option. The lack of this option combined with the bifurcation of the slides and the examples into a separate documents makes this course harder to follow that most other courses.

User Image
brendan.byrnside

Good overview of models and high level theories, but would have liked to see some of the examples actually done in Excel or another tool.

User Image
jacob.rothman

Good job logically laying this out. The use of video to demonstrate the technique was excellent. The instructor would be easier to listen to if he didn't end every sentance with "right?"

User Image
stephanie.tantillo

The course was easy to follow and understand. The presenter's summary was useful when taking the exit exam.

User Image
karol-ann.keenan

Very good advice for a new manager, easy to follow course content

User Image
lori.sherrill

The instructor gives me much to think about. There is so much in here that I think many aren't willing to say even though we know it to be true. There are many politics involved in the workplace. It is unfortunate, but reality, and he helps you to work through this unfortunate reality.

User Image
tbielas

I love how you used very clear and specific examples! Thank you Leslie!

User Image
declanharte

If I could have given 6 stars, it mightn't have been enough. He provided a very practical roadway to finance excellence. Great enthusiastic and knowledgeable presenter.

User Image

becky.williams

The training was well organized and was probably the best Ethics course i have taken.

User Image
thomas.tamura

Excellent instructor. Entertaining and very informative. Increase in understanding of sumifs.

User Image
rhonda.daugherty

I agree with the other reviewers that the exam focused too much on the actual result of a calculation of present value and not on the actual topic of lease accounting.

User Image
narendran.selvakumar

The instructor explains the concepts with relevant examples which makes it easy to understand and apply. The course is well structured and detailed to provide step by step procedure for creating RBIA approach.
