This course reviews ERISA Title I as it applies to health and welfare plans for all employers.
ERISA (Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974) is a requirement for employers of all sizes. Designed to protect the rights of workers, it provides the framework for employee welfare benefit plans such as medical, dental, vision and other ancillary coverages.
Unfortunately, many employers are not in compliance simply because they don’t realize it is applicable to them, have not updated their plans with newer laws, or because they assume that their insurance carrier is handling it all on their behalf.
The course will cover the basics of ERISA compliance, including what is covered, obligations and risks, and what is required of companies, depending on their size, in order to be compliant. We will also touch on other applicable benefit laws, including the ACA and HIPPA.
We will discuss:
- Reporting and disclosure
- Fiduciary responsibilities
- Administration and enforcement
- Additional standards—including COBRA
- Group health insurance requirements
Prerequisites
Prerequisite: Exposure to employee health and wellness plans
Learning Objective
- Clearly identify the level of compliance with ERISA for all health and welfare plans offered.
- Discern what actions will require additional compliance documents or a rewrite of current documents.
- Differentiate between requirements of various laws and at what size of company each is applicable.

(30 rating)This was a very interesting and relevant course. Internal Audit funcitons often face navigating the pull from management to engage in fraud investigations and that must be balanced with other Internal Audit activities, with the support of the Audit Committee.
This was a very informative course and enjoyed the instructor presentation and knowledge. I dont have no background in this area, however I wanted to get exposure and was surprised to see so much information on the subject matter. Will take additional courses with this instructor.
I like to read the slide decks in the pdf format. The pdfs for this course were not sufficient to learn the content.
Helpful starting point for understanding welfare plans.
Great background on the types of functions - didn't know those existed
An overall solid summation of the important characteristics of forensic accounting. I would recommend this to anyone interested in Forensic accounting.,
A good overall breakdown of ethical leaders, what distinguishes them, and why they are important for any organization, Felt a bit longer than necessary but overall enjoyed the discussion and exercises.
This course teaches you to how to think about thinking. Excellent how the presenter (who is excellent) explained the concepts using not just general but accountant specific problems.
The instructor spoke a little slow for my taste. I had to speed up the video to help me follow along. Good course, though.
Well worth your time. Very practical use of Outlook to become more efficient managing information at work. Keep the imprortant things the important things.
This is a really good informative course--thanks for putting it together.

Solid overview of ERISA and its requirements. I got what I needed from the course.
I believe that it is misleading to say 1 CPE and click here for 1 CPE, only to find out that CPE is not listed.
This instructor is always my favorite for Excel classes. His slides and presentations are excellent. It's a tad slow but the repetition makes the new formulas stick in my head.
I would have like to have seen how you initially created the dashboard.
Helpful reminders to remain proficient with excel and stay away from more manual bad habits.
Somewhat interesting. More practical examples wouldve helped.
From Wade Fowler: Found this eye opening. Great to know that what I will need to do should I ever start my own company and offer benefits to my own employees. Also, great insights into how to not only be compliant, but to avoid a DOL audit, and any other audits that might be triggered as the agencies are now sharing data. Always best to be on the right side of the law.
This course was well developed and well presented. Good coverage of the subject.
This course was really interesting because I learned about some of the new things I can do with 365. Definitely recommended. However, digging into the differences between various versions of Excel is not too interesting.
Other illumeo presenters should take this course! Awesome!
This course had good information that is helpful when dealing with multiple countries in the workplace.
This course was extremely beneficial, especially for a novice who is learning ERISA compliance.
I feel as though question 5 regarding foreign language disclosure was misleading. Either the information in the course was incorrect or the provided choices were not in depth enough to accurately answer the question. Great basis for understanding how plan documents are essential to maintaining ERISA status.
Really helpful to see the side-by-side presentation with Formula based reports vs Pivot table reports
Good insight in personalities and leadership. Excellent explanations of human behavior
Helpful intro - hard time hearing the audio at times.

Everything was clearly explained and having the documents for reference is great!
What about online identity theft companies? What do they do and are there worth the money? What are the steps to take if you have your identity stolen?
Excellent course
I liked that it was a summary of plan documents and summary plan descriptions. This course is well-designed for plan administrators, auditors, and others involved in the management of ERISA H&W plans.
The course is too basic for a CPA.
Would have liked more Health and Welfare specific information.
Excellent Course!!
David does an excellent job of showing you useful tips in Excel. The slides are a little hard to follow as they have too much information on each one. The sound quality is up and down throughout the presentation.
