Part of the continuing series of internal audit best practices, this session will provide insight on the realities of internal audit management roles, and the elements needed to build a strong internal audit department to provide the most value for your company. The world of internal audit has undergone many shifts over the past several years due to the state of the economic and pandemic concerns. However, these impacts must be evaluated in light of concepts outlined in the Internal Audit Standards.
The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) has done a tremendous job raising the profile of the auditing profession. As auditors, we strive to abide by the standards and guidelines. But have you ever asked management within your company if they knew such standards existed? Do they truly understand the concepts of risk-based auditing, independence, and obligations to the board or charter requirements? It is surprising how so many of these basic concepts are taken for granted by auditors and that we assume management is aware.
Individuals considering an internal audit management role should understand the challenges as well as benefits that may be presented to them within this role. It is critical that certain elements of the job be well understood by those holding the positions.
This session is designed to step into the reality of the internal audit management role, and discuss some of the concepts that aren’t always openly discussed within organizations--but are important concepts the internal audit manager should ensure they can clarify with management and be prepared to address on the job.
Prerequisites
No Advanced Preparation or Prerequisites are needed for this course.
Learning Objective
- Identify critical components of upholding your internal audit charter.
- Examine the difficulties of the concept of independence and objectivity.
- Explore and understand what management views as risk- based auditing.
- Discover and discuss the concept of agile auditing.
- Explore and evaluate if internal audit can develop the audit plan independently.
- Discover and examine what to do when management says “no”.

(256 rating)This was a very interesting and relevant course. Internal Audit funcitons often face navigating the pull from management to engage in fraud investigations and that must be balanced with other Internal Audit activities, with the support of the Audit Committee.
The presenter keeps a quick pace for this interesting subject and has a bullet point list on screen to make it easy to go back and find any part of the presentation.

I just went through a difficult situation and thus was taking this class so as to understand how I handled the whole situation. This is a great course and very helpful. I will definitely come back to review the slides from time to time. When Lynn mentioned that we should really pat ourselves on the back for handling the difficult situation, I truly felt relieved. My family and friends could not understand my decision of disconnect with the gangs of difficult leaders, perhaps perceiving me as a loser; however, Lynn appears to really understand what I went through and her lecture covers all aspects of this kind of situation. I recommend this course to anyone who needs it!
This is a great course. Easy to understand, clear and concise. I recommend it for anyone looking to better understand the controls in the order entry process.

When preparing for an Internal Control Certificate, it's essential to choose resources that align with the specific certification or credential you are pursuing and to dedicate sufficient time to study and practice. I would recommend this course.

Good overview of professional ethics for New York CPAs.
Well thought-out content and presentation. Periodic mis-spell and various fonts made it seem less professional and the course was prepared on the fly with heavy Covid-19/Zoom fatigue :)
This course was a good refresher. This course is ideal for people not as familiar with accounting. Thank you.

Lynn, the generational divide is an important concept to understand when hiring. This class helps me to understand the challenges in how I must lead the different members on my Team. The biggest challenge is in group meetings and in Team building. This course is very helpful. Thank you, Larry
The course was adequate but suggest you relook at the questions. The use of not in the questions is very confusing even for the most experienced person. Also your question in the final exam on incentives is poorly worded

A very thorough course covering all important areas: skill for IA management, managing the IA function, and building effective relationships with the Audit Committee. To be successful with the Audit Committee IA should make sure that management takes appropriate action to audit findings before raising the issue with the Audit Committee.
While downloading the slide deck noticed the slides on communication were missing.
This was a very confusing one. I finally passed when I answered one question which seemed again what the material and I understood. It was question six. I disagree that it should be answer A. A going concern is considered when a company has issues about going a year from the opinion letter date.

Supporting materials helped drive home discussion, relevant for CPA day-to-day dealings with Operations and Executive Management.
At times felt like the instruction generally repeated the bullet points on the screen by rearranging the words without providing much additional context. Did provide someone food for thoughts about the leadership styles of the people I work with.
Solid examples provided during the course. I agree with one of the key concepts, which was made very clear, that a conflict interest is not necessarily a problem. Once a conflict of interest is identified, it must be evaluate before determining what remedial action should be taken (if any action is required).

Nice course designed to provide the basic introduction to revenue from contracts with customers
Course was very interesting! Its also very useful for further understanding.
This course covered various leadership style, with pros and cons for adopting/applying each style. However, adding to the slides the pictures of leaders ( who may or may not have demonstrated certain leadership style) was a distraction and minimized the course effectiveness. For example, was Princess Diana an inspiration leader? Perhaps not! Was Dr. King a non-authoritarian leader? Absolutely not!!! This course is about organizational leadership. Therefore, perhaps the author should use corporate leaders (past and present) and specific corporate examples to depict each leadership type AND to make the course stronger.
