Course Level: Basic
Study Area: Specialized Knowledge

Business Intelligence (BI); the term is bandied about so frequently today that it might seem like everyone except you already understands it. The truth is that like “Big Data”, another biz-tech term bandied about these days, business intelligence is actually not well understood at all. Most people who talk about business intelligence have at best a general notion of what it means and almost no experience with actually using BI in a meaningful way. However, BI is an important new tool for modern business.

Advances in computing power can now give businesses ways to analyze data that they never could before. With these advances, firms can make decisions about pricing, marketing, new products, and resource allocation more effectively than they have ever been able to in the past. Major corporations like Kroger are starting to use BI to help determine what products they should advertise to specific customers. General Electric is using BI to more efficiently run its industrial maintenance schedules. Citi is using BI to help proactively figure out the maximum interest rates various customers are willing to pay. BI is useful in all of these settings and much more.

This instructor gave an easy to follow overview of FBAR Issues. We must take into account that 2024 may have some differences such as maximum penalty. But this was a clear and concise presentation of the nuances regarding FBAR and Form 8938 Filings.

I found the personality style quadrant very helpful in understanding my need for flexibility and learning "how to read the room." Much more flexibility compared to Myers-Briggs. I particularly appreciated the instructor's perspectives on how we can adapt our behaviors to work effectively work with counterparts who demonstrate different styles.

Of the many, many courses I have taken on the Illumeo platform, this was definitely one of the best and most insightful. I have always found elements of "behavioral finance" to be fascinating and powerful in planning, strategy, and business performance. Mr. Stephens has bundled the leading theories and presented them as a unified new "dimension" for planners and leaders to factor in. He has done so in a manner that CFO's and other business leaders will undoubtedly find easy to digest, replete with useful examples. The consideration of these concepts will undoubtedly add value via improvement decision-making and more enlightened risk assessments. Thank you for such a quality contribution to the Illumeo portfolio!!

I hope this could be a recording course. It took me a white to read this material. It may be easier if the instructor can show us how the formula works.

User Image
jake.laptad

Rob does an outstanding job of effectively teaching the Key Performance Indicators and KPI Dashboards. The course was well-structured, providing a comprehensive understanding of KPIs and their critical role in measuring and driving business performance. The content was insightful and easy to follow, with a perfect blend of theory and practical examples. The section on creating KPI dashboards was particularly valuable, offering hands-on guidance on designing and implementing effective dashboards that provide real-time insights into business performance. The instructor was knowledgeable and engaging, making complex concepts accessible and relevant. The interactive elements and practical exercises helped reinforce the learning and provided me with the confidence to apply these concepts to my own work. Overall, this course is a must for anyone looking to deepen their understanding of KPIs and enhance their ability to track and manage performance effectively. I highly recommend it!

User Image
pabstdavid

Great class- one of the better ones! As someone who has a published book, I can attest to the importance of editing.

User Image
jamie.danner

What is this question ? The Altman Z statistic measures the efficiency of a firms marketing efforts over the past: The Altman Z score is about the probability of bankruptcy in the next two years... It has nothing to do with measuring marketing efforts .. How is this an exam question ?

User Image
alejandra.chacon

Excellent, is a great introduction to start and put hands on the data and work with it.

User Image
dustin.stuart

I am somebody that hopes and believes that crypto will be the future of payments and investing. The one thing I do not like is how scared people get when you mention the word crypto. People are also very misinformed a lot of times or just do not care to be informed. So my only critique would be the fact that the risks of cryptocurrencies are comparable to investing in stocks or holding cash in a bank account. Illegal acts have been happening since the dawn of man and cryptocurrency has a fraction of wrongdoing on its RAP sheet compared to cash and other financial tools. Just trying to make crypto seem less scary. Change is good.

User Image
jack.kearney_1

A very good course for providing best practices on how to run a presentation along with the actual research to back them.

User Image
chris.rightnour

A very good course to meet the Ohio PSR requirement

User Image
samhuhr

Useful beginners info on Google Sheet and introductory usage for Google drive.

User Image
lindsey.dawson

Clear and Concise course. Learned a lot about analyzing data.

User Image
thor.bendickson

Though the material in this course was well thought out and presented, I found it distasteful and unpatriotic to include a former president, not just as an example of an amoral/immoral leader, but also the answer to an exam question. Keep your politics out of my professional learning materials...

User Image
eileen.oldham

Clearly a very thorough series of courses and the speaker brought a lot of personal experience to the courses. A young grad wishing to climb the ladder would benefit from this series. I wish the final exam could have been taken in pieces as I progressed through the series as opposed to doing all 61 questions after listening to the 8 courses.

User Image
jeanette.rooneym_cpa_cgma

This is a good, quick refresher course to get your mind going during Covid isolation.

User Image
jesse.campbell

This course did a really nice job with individual case studies and footage of historical figures to illustrate the contrasts in leadership.

User Image
dianh.sarman-moschetti

Depending on the student's knowledge of Excel this may be a little basic. However, there are several little tricks to incorporate. This instructor performs a double presentation of the material, it is great if you are unfamiliar with what is being taught, it can be redundant if you are more knowledgeable about the subject; but as a general approach I feel it is helpful.

User Image
shelly.rogers

Excellent information in this course but your exam was so far off base and there is no way, even though you say there is, to review missed answers on the exam.

User Image
rose.gingrich

This course was very helpful. new tools for me to practice and master. If you work with data and excel this is the right course. take it and you will find that worth more than you imagine.

User Image
alisa_gay

Very good class, informative materials and well presented

User Image
tara.boring

This course could have been really cool, but I couldn't follow the Excel directions....

User Image
kevin_falini

I appreciate all of the practice. Lot's of problems help to develop proficiency at speed.

User Image

I found that the power point did not have the take aways from the course.

User Image
diana.carter

There should be a handout which can be referred to with more information that assists with the exam. This took longer than 3 hours.

User Image
cindy.wells

Explanation/presentation was very conversational and provided a lot of insight based on real experience with the legislation.

User Image
reut.cohen

I wish I saw this training at my previous job. What a good, straightforward approach to managing the situation.

User Image

This course is very easy to follow and the tip to get the budget template is great.

User Image
dopm83

Great course for being introduced to the Blockchain world

User Image
melissa_kronenberger

The course itself was fantastic. I would take pieces of it again as refreshers. Given the final exam is 160 questions, I would have been better suited to take the classes in two hour chunks with credit after each class. It was also incredibly frustrating to answer the same question numerous times in the final exam.

User Image
mark.maertens-poole

Decent information, but editing of commentary could be better.

User Image
steven.wang

The course has no insight but just reading off the slides word for word.

User Image

I am a little surprised at how poorly this course is taught. It is a whole lot of information jammed into excessively long discussions and readings. There should be a lot more examples.

User Image

User Image
emily.sherman

User Image

Great stuff as always, Michael. Thanks to Grant Thornton for making this available.

User Image
charles.elwis

After having been away from auditing for many years, this was an excellent refresher course.

User Image
sally.schroeder

Seems silly to have an exam on this topic, probably because I watched the video after completing 10 Illumeo courses. :-)

User Image
jeremiah.patton

The course is general enough for most audiences, but doesn't expand on topics enough for those who work in a cyber-related role.

User Image
rina.patel

This course was great. The material was clear to understand.

User Image
katie.marciniak

It is interesting to learn about how to choose variables and how to look out for omitted variables.

User Image
elizabeth.ewing

Good course, I would like to expand more and go through some sample leases to learn to read the lease language that way as well.

User Image
ryan.richardson

Course was informative and easy to navigate. I would recommend it to a colleague.

User Image
david.skipper

Great course, always insightful content. Learned a bunch of new regression material

User Image
luis.lucchini

Great course, the documents are relevant are properly explain the material covered. I would argue that some of it is outdated and should consider tools available to be used with Excel. Some of the questions in the test need to be reviewed too.

User Image
ayman.anter

Many supporting materials didn't open. Many supporting materials didn't open.

User Image

User Image
alyssa.carter

Seeing how it is used by businesses is interesting. Would like to see more of "how" it is done.

User Image
kate.eberle

This course provides a good general overview of how to structure data appropriately. The emphasis on financial ratios and metrics seems overly specific to one domain, but makes sense given the instructor's background.

User Image
mark.romanelli

The course had a large amount of overlap between the Data Collection and Cleaning course

User Image
james.kelley

I liked this course's description of BI tools like Tableau and data analytic tools like R.

Some of the review and exam questions were irrelevant or out right wrong. The bullet points could have been organized better to be more communicative and concise.
