COSO 2013 Overview 2 CPE

Course Duration: 2 Hours
Course Rating:
Course Enrollments: 1286 Enrolled
Mode of Delivery: on_demand
Course Level: Intermediate
Study Area: Auditing

It's been more than 20 years since the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission (COSO) released its Internal Control—Integrated Framework (the original framework). The original framework is widely accepted as a leading framework for designing, implementing, and conducting internal control and assessing the effectiveness of internal control. Since then, technology has drastically changed the business operating environment and the associated risks. In May 2013, the COSO foundation released an update to the framework.

The framework was updated due to global economic changes, enhanced information technology and increased shareholder expectations. Professionals must obtain a basic understanding of the concepts, principles and potential impact, including changes from the 1992 framework and the key COSO components and 17 principles. This course provides an overview of the important concepts of COSO 2013. You'll learn about the important changes in the COSO framework and explore opportunities for management to place a renewed focus on internal control and enhance and solidify their Sarbanes-Oxley attestation.

Citations of information on the COSO framework, principles and points of focus mentioned through this course are directly worded from the COSO literature and relayed here with the permission of COSO.org as a training mechanism related to their framework. The full document of the Framework can be found at COSO.org.

Information within this course comes from readily available public domain documents and is utilized by the trainer as a supplement for relaying the course content.

Note: The concepts outlined in this course are up to date and relevant in regards to the Sarbanes-Oxley legislation. Although there have not been any changes in the legislative concepts of the law since it’s release in 2002, some aspects of executing the work have evolved. This speaker is preparing a series of courses titled “Sarbanes-Oxley 20 years later”. Those courses can be found individually on the platform and would be beneficial for anyone involved with compliance.

This was a very interesting and relevant course. Internal Audit funcitons often face navigating the pull from management to engage in fraud investigations and that must be balanced with other Internal Audit activities, with the support of the Audit Committee.

User Image
dorothy.burns

Blair Cook was an excellent presenter. The material was useful.

User Image
elizabeth.wallenius

Course could use some updating and more information about what ITGCs are and how all ITGCs are applied. NIST is not the only framework appropriate for ITGCs. Organizations may be more business focused and not security focused and prefer using a more focused framework than NIST. COBIT comes to mind but it does not cover all requirements and at times is hard to understand. I would not say NIST is easy to understand. ITGCs are spread out across a number of the 23 topics and need to be linked back to specific ITGC objectives for a control/process owner to see the his entire domain within one picture.

User Image
jon.mcginnis

This was very helpful and I will definitely save these training materials if our department is ever called on to conduct an audit of the network. Currently we also have an Information Security team that is a second line of defense to our Internal Audit team.

User Image
james.gately

This was a very confusing one. I finally passed when I answered one question which seemed again what the material and I understood. It was question six. I disagree that it should be answer A. A going concern is considered when a company has issues about going a year from the opinion letter date.
